Ibiza

Ses Illetes isn't just a pretty beach — it's a beach with credentials. TripAdvisor has placed it in its global Travellers' Choice top 25 multiple years running, and in 2022 it ranked second in Europe. Condé Nast Traveller, National Geographic, and Forbes have all listed it among the continent's finest. Those rankings rest on something more durable than aesthetics: the ecology beneath the water.
The beach occupies the western shore of the Trucadors peninsula, a narrow 4-kilometre sand spit that stretches northward from Formentera toward the islet of Espalmador. On both sides, the water is extraordinarily shallow for hundreds of metres — in places you can wade out 150 metres and still be knee-deep. That geometry, combined with the absence of river outflows and industrial activity, creates near-zero turbidity. But the real secret lies below the surface.
The seabed surrounding the peninsula is carpeted with Posidonia oceanica meadows, a species of seagrass — not algae — that is one of the oldest and largest living organisms on Earth. The Posidonia beds between Ibiza and Formentera are estimated to be approximately 100,000 years old. They act as a living filtration system, oxygenating the water, trapping sediment, and producing the legendary turquoise colour that photographers struggle to do justice to. It is precisely because of these meadows that the entire area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 — a status expanded in 2013 to cover additional marine zones.
One important clarification for searchers: Ses Illetes (Formentera) is a completely different beach from Illetes on Ibiza's southwestern coast. The two names cause consistent confusion online. If you're looking for the UNESCO-protected, TripAdvisor-ranked beach on the Trucadors peninsula, you want Formentera — and you want Ibiza & Formentera on a Sailboat as the most elegant way to get there.

Ses Illetes sits inside the Ses Salines Natural Park, and that UNESCO status comes with real, enforced access rules. Getting these wrong in peak season can mean turning back at the park boundary after a 35-minute ferry ride — which is entirely avoidable with the right information.
Vehicle entry fee: Private cars and motorbikes entering the natural park zone toward Ses Illetes pay a regulated environmental fee during high season (typically June through September). Formentera residents are exempt. The fee varies by vehicle type and is collected at a control point on the road from La Savina. On peak days in July and August, the number of vehicles permitted is capped, and cars are routinely turned away once the limit is reached — often before 10am.
The L3 bus: The smartest land-based option. The L3 bus departs from La Savina port (Formentera's main ferry terminal) and reaches the Ses Illetes area in approximately 10 minutes. A round-trip ticket costs around €10. It runs frequently in summer and is not subject to the vehicle cap — making it the stress-free choice for day-trippers arriving by public ferry.
Bike and scooter rental: La Savina has multiple rental outlets clustered around the port. The cycling distance from the port to Ses Illetes is under 4 kilometres along a flat, well-marked route — entirely manageable for most fitness levels and a genuinely pleasant ride through salt flats and low scrubland.
Arrive before 10am in July and August if driving. After that point, access is frequently restricted and queues at the control point can add an hour to your journey before you even reach the beach.
No permanent beach bars: UNESCO protections prohibit fixed commercial structures on the beach. This is why Ses Illetes has no built chiringuitos — instead, food and drink boats anchor just offshore, serving paella, cold drinks, and fresh fish directly to swimmers. It's quirky, charming, and completely unique. The Private Catamaran Ibiza and Formentera Full Day Trip means you bring your own floating dining room and skip the queue for the food boats entirely.

There is a version of Ses Illetes that most visitors never experience. It involves no ferry queue at Ibiza Town or Sant Antoni, no vehicle fee control point, no L3 bus schedule, and no scramble for a patch of sand. Instead, your boat drops anchor in the turquoise anchorage directly off the Trucadors peninsula, and you slip into the water from the deck.
The public fast ferry from Ibiza to Formentera's La Savina port takes approximately 35 minutes and costs around €31 each way — a perfectly valid budget option. But it deposits you at the port, where you still need transport, still need to navigate the access regulations, and still arrive at the same crowded shoreline as everyone else on that sailing.
Private sailboats and catamarans departing from Ibiza take a different route. The anchorage area off Ses Illetes and the northern tip of the Trucadors peninsula is one of the classic stops on Ibiza–Formentera sailing itineraries — a wide, calm bay where boats moor in just 3–5 metres of crystal water directly above the Posidonia meadows. From the deck, you snorkel over seagrass that is older than any human civilisation. You have lunch on board with the beach as your unobstructed backdrop. You return to Ibiza as the sun drops, with a glass of something cold in hand.
Local Cool Tour's 8-hour full-day format is specifically built to give you enough time to properly enjoy the anchorage rather than rushing a 90-minute stop. The Formentera & Ibiza Small Group Trip by Catamaran offers the same anchorage experience in a sociable small-group format — a genuinely affordable way to reach Ses Illetes without any of the land-based logistics.
For those who prefer the full private experience, the Ibiza & Formentera on a Sailboat tour offers flexible itinerary options tailored to your group.
