Created by the Danish sculptor Edvard Eriksen at the beginning of the 20th century on behalf of the Jacobsens, the family that owned the Carlsber brewery, this sculpture of a mermaid, made of bronze, 1 metre high, was donated to the city and installed on a rock near the harbour on 23 August 1913.
Jacobsen wanted to pay homage to the Danish ballerina Ellen Price, the great star of the Royal Danish Ballet, who had achieved great success in the ballet based on the fairy tale The Little Mermaid written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1837.
