Bioparc Valencia is a 10-hectare zoological park that opened in February 2008 on the western edge of the city, adjacent to the Cabecera Park along the Turia riverbed. It was conceived and built around the revolutionary philosophy of "zoo-immersion," a design model that eliminates the visual barriers — cages, fences, and glass walls — traditionally separating visitors from animals. Instead, carefully engineered terrain, dry moats, water features, and dense African vegetation create the illusion that humans and wildlife share the same unbroken landscape. The entire park is dedicated exclusively to African ecosystems, making it one of the few single-continent zoological parks in Europe.
The park is organized into distinct African biomes: the equatorial forest, home to western lowland gorillas; the savannah, where African elephants, lions, white rhinoceroses, and giraffes roam across expansive terrain; the flooded forest; and the Madagascar zone, featuring ring-tailed lemurs and fossas. The meerkat colony inhabits a semi-arid scrubland habitat, and visitors can observe them from sunken viewing areas that place human eyes at ground level with the animals. Since opening, Bioparc has received multiple international awards for its ethical approach to animal welfare and habitat design, and it is consistently ranked among the best zoological parks in Europe by specialized institutions and visitor surveys alike.
Beyond its design philosophy, Bioparc operates a foundation dedicated to in-situ conservation projects across Africa, funding programs to protect wild gorilla populations in Cameroon and elephant corridors in Central Africa. The park participates in more than 40 European Endangered Species Programmes (EEPs), coordinating breeding efforts across accredited zoos to maintain genetically healthy populations. Educational talks and keeper-led feeding sessions are scheduled throughout the day, offering visitors structured opportunities to learn about each species' ecology, behavior, and conservation status directly from the park's zoological staff.
Bioparc is located on Avenida Pío Baroja, reachable by Valencia's metro (Line 1, Nou d'Octubre station) or by bus along the Turia park cycling and walking paths. The park opens daily from 10:00 a.m., with last entry two hours before closing; hours extend in summer. Tickets are available online at reduced rates and it is strongly advisable to book ahead during school holidays and summer weekends. Allow a minimum of three to four hours to explore all habitats thoroughly. Strollers and wheelchairs are fully accommodated across the park's paved and packed-earth pathways, and on-site catering includes a restaurant with terrace views over the savannah enclosure.
